- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Master of Science in Building Conservation program was created in 1998 through the vision of School of Architecture Dean Alan Balfour, who recognized that a significantly increasing percentage of construction in the 21st century would involve rehabilitation of existing structures, particularly in the northeast. Led by Frederick Cawley, former executive assistant to New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation commissioner Joan Davidson and long-time executive director of the Preservation League of New York State, the 32-credit, part-time, alternate weekend program is taught by a 15-member, all-adjunct faculty, who have published widely and are nationally recognized experts in their fields, whose full-time employment is with the region's leading historic preservation architecture, engineering, materials conservation, planning, and archeology firms (see below).
